========================================

Tucked away in a secluded corner of east Singapore, there lies a beach which not many Singaporeans know about. This area is probably known to a few groups of people. The kiteboarding enthusiasts, the old skool mountain bikers who since retired from the biking scene, and probably the black Indian workers who work there.

A paranoma photo of Stinky Bay

I learnt of this place when one of my colleague brought up this topic of a place called Stinky Bay. He provide me a site that shows someone kiteboarding and asked me if I know this place. I’ve never been there but the photos attracted me. Blue waters, sandy beach and lush greenery. Wow, is this even Singapore? So I manage to get the gang to go for this recce last weekend instead of going to some certain farms at Lim Chu Kang (thank god).

Julie coming thru'

I managed to convince Michelle into this ride and she in turns managed to convince Julie who rode from Jurong West all the way to East Coast Park to meet us. Weather turned bad in late noon when we just about to head that direction. A quick storm and everything dried up fast. We rode to the end of ECP and headed into the long never-ending road. We hit dead-end at the Navel base. Recce a small fisherman track and reached the sea. Mich took a view of the splashing water and said it wouldn’t be possible for them to board here as the sea was too choppy. Wrong place.

Pine tree?

We headed out. LCT was dead sure it was at the airbase, so we headed to the non-trespassing airbase guardhouse and provided some entertainments to the guards on duty. I sniggered at the group for asking some young 18 year old boys about this place which none of them knew. The guards were helpful and friendly but we shouldn’t be stepping on forbidden ground. :)

Cry me a river?

Smacked right in the mid between the airbase and the NewWater gigantic plant, we reached the entrance. A makeshift guardhouse stacked on top of a few boulder cubes with a couple of graffiti written: “State Land, No Entry”. We happily moved forward and an Indian guard leaped out and told us this gate closed at 5pm, denying our entry. We haggled with him for a while but was unsuccessful. With smile on our faces, we saw the vast clay-like terrain on our right and bashed in. The guard came behind us and was speaking into his handphone in tamil while helplessly amused at what we buggers were going to do.

River leading to the sea

Rock n Roll time on the brownish soil which grew many nice nimosa plants. Eventually we found our way to the gravel road. When we looked to the front, a sight welcomed us. A vast land of low level shrubs with some occasion litter of small pine trees greeted us. In the far front, a flock of birds displayed their ‘airshow performance’ for us. Are we in Singapore? This place looked more like the African safari.

Nice cut out trail for us

As we rode the long gravel road, from a distance a vehicle approached into our direction. They didn’t stop us, we thought they were the backups called by the guard! :D We reached a river. It flowed from inland and out to the vast sea surrounded by the cliff-like structure and delta. Mich looked at me and asked if this was the said Stinky Bay. Doesn’t look like it but we found a route leading out to the sea. The ground soon turned into sandy path as we skidded and slided with our 2.1 knobbies. We eventually reached the beach. The sand was beautifully clear white and the shore washed up pristine clear water. But just don’t look back to the beach behind because it was practically covered with litters. Dang! Dirty area breeds sandflies and LCT & Julie were bitten. We looked to the far end of the other side and saw Pengerang and the breakwater. Stinky Bay should be on the other side. We wasted no time in moving off.

Clear white sand

Back to the same trail where we entered, this time round we snow-sled with our bikes on the sandy part. A sort of intended fun! Mich lost her balance and fell a slow fall and the vast land filled with my roaring laughter. Well, at least she fell on soft ground. :D We headed into the wasteland, home of the wild dogs. The dogs here were guerilla-trained. Stout and muscular, not your average neighbourhood soft and overweight pet dogs. They looked at us with their watchful eyes and gave us approval to proceed. The last dog barked at his companions probably as a sign that we were good to go. :s Then came to the land of stink that welcomed us. The funk of 100 years excrement wafted through the air that even if we held onto our breath, the smell eventually found its way into our noses. Just as we struggled with the smell, the bay surfaced in front of us. 4 warriors standing on top of fecal wasteland, overlooking at the sea in front of us. So this is Stinky Bay, boy it definitely stinks!

Clean shore

Stinky Bay is an enclosed area. Not sure how it was formed or why land reclamation does it this way, but it sure is a good place to swim because of calm water. We didn’t went down though. Rather, we followed the trail which eventually led us to the end where the new runway which the Airshow usually held. We were so near Changi and yet the fence blocked all possible way out.

Wasteland and Stinky Bay

Here we wandered in a vast bushed area where there is not a single human in sight. All that greeted us were huge egrets black or white flying out from the shrubs, eagles hovering above us and flocks of unknown birds with different chirps flew about. The No Mans Land. The sun was going down on us. We had probably 2 hrs of daylight to move out of this place. As we rode into the setting sun, we rode among the field of gold, covered with pinky wild flowers. Romantic sight! All sort of wild flowers bloom here. Pity I couldn’t stop to take pictures as we needed to head out. It then dawned on me some mtbers in the past did mentioned that there was a coastal trail behind Coastal Rd. This should be what they were saying back then.

Riding along glowing pinky flowers. So lomantic!

Back to the same spot at the Stinky Bay, LCT pointed out that this was Pam’s Pee Pee Corner. -.- Yeah, we all left our markings there at different areas. Well, we have been there, saw it. Of course we do leave something behind. But what we left were environment-friendly. Not litters but our human juice. Muahahaha. End of story.

i know that a new season unfolds here ... at 5:02 p.m.
fate must have been crumbled before and after here
